Vasyl Ivanchuk is a Ukrainian grandmaster who has stood among the world's elite since the late 1980s, twice climbing to world number two and peaking at a 2787 rating in 2007. Across a career spanning four decades he has beaten every world champion from Karpov to Carlsen, yet the crown itself eluded him — most painfully in the 2002 FIDE World Championship final, which he lost to Ruslan Ponomariov.

Known universally as "Chucky," he is chess's great romantic: a player capable of crushing the strongest opposition one round and stumbling against far weaker hands the next. That same imagination delivered tournament wins at Linares, Wijk aan Zee, and the Tal Memorial, plus the 2007 World Blitz and 2016 World Rapid titles.

Now in his fifties, Ivanchuk remains active and beloved — proof that brilliance and consistency rarely share the same board.
